Application and tuition fees

Beginning with the autumn semester of 2011, Sweden will be introducing application and tuition fees for some international students who apply for courses and programmes at universities and university colleges. For more information, please visit universityadmissions.se.

Exchange students and EU/EEA residents are exempt from paying fees, but as a free mover from abroad you need to check fees carefully before applying.

An application fee is payable when applying at studera.nu. Tuition fees are paid directly to the university. You do not need to pay an application fee if you are registered for studies at a Swedish university at the time of applying. You are entitled to terminate your studies (course or programme) without paying tuition fees.

Who needs to pay application fees and tuition fees?

From August 2011 (autumn term) Swedish universities will introduce application and tuition fees for citizens from outside the EU/EEA (and Switzerland).

Students who will pay fees:

  • Citizens from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland
  • Fees will apply to undergraduate and graduate courses and programmes (i.e. bachelor's and master's level courses and programmes).

Students who will not pay fees:

  • Citizens from within the EU/EEA and Switzerland will not be charged fees.
  • Exchange students (from all countries) will not be charged tuition fees.
  • PhD programmes will not be affected.
  • Students who have already started studying before fees are introduced will not be expected to pay fees when they are introduced. For example, if you begin a two-year programme in 2010, you will be able to complete your studies without paying fees.

If you are exempt from paying fees, you must be able to prove that this is the case. In order for your application to be processed, you must therefore submit a certified copy of your passport/ID document showing your citizenship within the completion time.
