Why Shouldn't We be Contextualists?
Abstract: In this talk, I present the basic ideas behind two contextualist frameworks: Relevance theory (eg. Wilson & Sperber 2004) and Recanati's association-based account of pragmatic processes (Recanati 2004). Two theoretical problems with the frameworks are identified and addressed: the problem with over-generation (Stanley 2005) and the problem with the so-called "availability principle" and indirect reports (Cappelen & Lepore 2005). After an outline of each problem, I present and comment contextualist responses to the theoretical challenges.
